Fire Marshal Training
The Fire Marshal Training Division provides specialized training for local, regional, and state fire inspectors. Initial training focuses on the 2012 International Fire Code and International Building Code. In order to apply for state certification, Resident Fire Marshals must be certified to the ICC Fire Inspector I level. The South Carolina Fire Academy offers a preparatory course twice each year to help students prepare for the exam. To become certified as a Resident Fire Marshal, candidates must also participate in a workshop that orients them to specific South Carolina statutes, rules and regulations.
Once certified, Resident Fire Marshals are required to participate in continuing education programs. Continuing education programs are offered through the South Carolina Fire Academy. Additional continuing education can be approved by contacting the Community Risk Manager at the State Fire Marshal’s office at (803) 896-5454.
