The Division of Fire and Life Safety has the statutory authority to collect, analyze and disseminate fire data provided by local fire departments. In 1983, the Division adopted the National Fire Incident Reporting System to help accomplish this mandate. Throughout the United States, 49 states and 35 metropolitan areas participate in this collection mechanism.
SCFIRS is an integral part of our efforts to collect and analyze information concerning the response of local fire departments. The gathered information is used to:
- guide fire protection decisions
- identify and suggest solutions to problems
- monitor and evaluate prevention programs
An additional goal is to maintain a comprehensive database to serve fire, building and other code officials, researchers, educators, and the general public.
