COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley today announced Shane Ray as State Fire Marshal. His first day will be July 31, 2012.
Chief Ray has 26 years of experience in fire and emergency services. For the last seven months, Ray has served as the Superintendent of the South Carolina Fire Academy.
Gov. Haley said, “We’re thrilled that Shane Ray has agreed to serve as Fire Marshal. His experience ensuring the safety of our community and meeting the needs of our fire service members make him a great fit.”
Prior to his work with the South Carolina Fire Academy, Chief Ray was Fire Chief of the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department in Tennessee. During his time at Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, he was named the Fire Chief Magazine Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year. He also served as Mayor of the town of Pleasant View, Tennessee for six years (1998 – 2004) where he was responsible for management, administration and operations.
Chief Ray also participated in the Harvard, John F. Kennedy School of Government's Local and Elected Officials Program in 2003. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.

The S.C. Fire Marshal's Office is part of the S.C. Division of Fire and Life Safety, which is a division of the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
